Back in 5 min 4 days…

Been up to lots of things over the last few weeks.

The 12th was the annual CS pub crawl. It was good fun being out with my old class again, even though there wasn’t much crawling (2 pub in 5 hours) before we all went to the Palace (*shudder*), just like we did back in first year… 🙂

Since that Friday, I’ve also been on holidays, although I’ve been working on college work for some of it and will be doing more work. As of tomorrow, I’m off to Wexford for a few days to get away from almost everything (although my work is following me down).

On the nerdy side, I’ve been up to many things, such as getting an interesting (non x86) toy to play with. I’ve yet to collect it or decide what I’m doing with it yet, but it shall be a server of some description. I’ve also gotten all the components together to finally build my terrabyte fileserver at home to store all my multimedia and personal crap in one place… Unfortunately, it takes quite a while to copy all my DivX and mp3s off some of the disks I need for my RAID array… :-/

Moving…

I’ve decided over the next few weeks, in between college and actual work (of the paying variety), I’m going to migrate various parts of my website from the numerous servers it’s currently on to trastevere, my name for the server I’ve gotten with whats-his-name. I’m also going to clean up and fix parts of the site, such as the stylesheet, the photo gallery and the import the old MT blog archives into WordPress for a start….

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been developing a general thirst for techy/nerdy knowledge. It started by properly signing up and paying for a Safari account to gain access to more than the 50 odd books in the TCD Safari account. So far, I’ve found it useful, and will continue to do so, especially since I’ve decided (after kicking up a bit of a thread on the topic of Cisco Certifications on SAGE-IE) I’d like to sit and get a CCNA this summer, before I get to 4th year. So my plan is to go get the Self Study Library and use my Safari account to skim through a few other books (I’m already using it to read about interesting things like LDAP, FreeBSD and various things about Mac OS X. Hopefully, all that and my college work will keep my going for a little while…

In college, it’s that usual time of year, group work projects are starting up again. So far, I have 2 (well 3, but a group of 2 doesn’t count…), the first has been a little bumpy and confrontational (following my group work experience/tradition), the newest one looks quite interesting, randomly assigned group I’m quite happy to be in and the project is assessed on documentation submitted more than code. I’m quite tempted to whip up a few scripts in Perl (yes, I swallowed my pride and started reading Learning Perl, mainly to read and understand other people’s scripts) or Python to parse the logs of whatever version control system we use (I’m suggesting Subversion, of course 😉 to simplify such tasks…

At least I can’t wait for my well deserved 3 week break starting next Friday. I’m planning on dissappearing off to Wexford, as per usual for a few days away from (almost) everything. Ciara and Thog are coming with me of course. After that, Ciara and I are considering going to Belfast for a day trip sometime after my birthday (which is Easter Sun and the start of DST this year), mainly to go shopping for clothes we can’t find in the new Dundrum Town Centre. It’s a shame we still haven’t found somewhere online which will ship Old Navy clothes to Ireland. 🙁
