Yes, I’m Still Alive…

Published by conall at 2:54 under General,Personal,Work

I figured I should put something up here.

I’ve been quite busy in the last few days, mainly while college is wrapping up for 4 weeks over Christmas. I spent a significant part of the weekend fixing the upstream broadband connection and my file server at home. All is working again now thankfully, things are even new and improved. The file server issue was quite simple in the end, replaced the SCSI cable and the system disks appeared again. Doh!

Instead of having 1 FreeBSD and 4 Debian servers, I’ve consolidated them all into 2 FreeBSD servers, which will probably morph into 1 FreeBSD server and a FreeBSD running net4801 soon enough.

On the college side of things, recent coursework is all out of the way. Now I just have to focus on my project and an assignment due late January on Web Services (which I’ve decided to do using Perl, and maybe Python too ;) )

Otherwise, I haven’t been up to too much. I am currently keeing an eye on the current mobile phone offerings though, my current V800 could do with being replaced, it’s starting to show it’s age at this point. The problem I’ve found is, there are no decent mobile phone at the moment…

All I require is a nice, business class phone with good battery life, bluetooth and iSync support. An email client would also be nice, but I’ve all but given up on that feature, since I can see myself within the next year getting a Treo 650 as a Blackberry-esque device, which will actually talk to my email servers as I’d like.

Of all the phones available, I can only find a few that meet my criteria, namely the W800i and the K750i. I’m not a huge fan of the modern Nokia phones, plus support for newer models in iSync is non existant. Both phones are nice, but since the W800i also doubles as a Sony MP3 Player and has a large MemoryStick card with it, I know I wouldn’t use one of it’s major features at all. So I guess it’s the K750i then.

Now all I have to do is wait til January, when I’m able to upgrade my phone…

    Hello!

I can only recommend the k750i :) It works flawlessly on FreeBSD via the supplied USB cable. It is recognized immediately when you plug in:

    umass0: 8070i (ATAPI) over Bulk-Only; quirks = 0×0000
    umass0:4:0:-1: Attached to scbus4
    da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device
    da0: 1.000MB/s transfers
    da0: 61MB (126912 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 61C)

You just mount da0s1, and lo, there are all the files. Also, there are plenty of nice themes available freely on the net (just search for it on google). What I haven’t tried is bluetooth support (I don’t have a bluetooth card – if you know of any that is supported well on FreeBSD, please tell me about it) – altough it must be very nice (with bluetooth hid support, the k750i can be used as a remote to your computer!).

BTW… I went through the same “consolidation” as you – and ended up with FreeBSD on my desktop as well as my server (I still have a spare partition for linux though)…

  2. [...] Plus, I could only get the k750i, as previously pondered, on Vodafone and O2, since it is the only phone I actually liked. I guess my decision ultimately boiled down to better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t… [...]
